OVERVIEW
Eco-Discovery Camp is our response to the tremendous demand for programs that are aimed at getting children outside. We offer exciting and challenging programs for children ages 11 to 13. Committed to quality and safety, Leaders of the Day’s model of education is based on experiential learning – “learn by doing”. Through group activities which encourage leadership skills, teamwork, courage, confidence, respect, and the ability to meet new challenges, children gain a new sense of themselves.
Building on the philosophy, traditions and values of Leaders of the Day’s successful programming, children will canoe, climb on our high ropes course, swim, camp out under the stars, play games, explore the natural world, track down insects & amphibians, learn about composting, see alternative energies at work to power their lights, and venture out on a 4-day/3-night backpacking expedition on the doorstep to Algonquin Park (close to our base camp). Your child’s adventure at Eco-Discovery Camp is sure to be full of fun, active unplugged play outside & learning, building memories and patterns to last throughout their life.
THE EXPEDITION
The overnight backpacking expedition presents an opportunity for each camper to take on new responsibilities, while strengthening self-leadership skills & learning valuable eco-friendly wilderness camping practices. The students will venture out on their expedition to campsites not too far from our base camp to be supported, but far enough to feel like an accomplishment and a real adventure!

ECO-DISCOVERY CAMP STAFF
Our Instructors are well-trained, experienced, enthusiastic and fun-loving people. Accomplished with a wide variety of wilderness travel & leadership skills, many of our Instructors are graduates of Leaders of the Day Leadership or Educator Programs. They are all trained in a minimum of Wilderness Advanced First Aid & Bronze Cross, CPR & lifesaving.
For many Eco-Discovery Campers, this could be their first time away from home. Our caring Instructors provide a nurturing environment for your child, making them feel comfortable and safe. Additional support staff includes the Eco-Discovery Camp Director & both Leaders of the Day Co-Owners, all dedicated to meeting the needs of Eco-Discovery Campers.
HOME AWAY FROM HOME
Eco-Discovery Camp is situated on the shores of Hinsberger Lake, outside of South River, ON, (just north of Huntsville & south of North Bay, ON). In this lovely wilderness setting, Eco-Discovery Camp makes use of a dining hall, a multi-use program building, a pristine private lakefront setting, and acres of untouched surrounding forest. There are welcoming bunk rooms in our rustic lodges & large fireplaces for evening get-togethers or rainy day programs and other activities. Campers sleep in bunkhouses nestled in the woods amongst towering red and white pines, on the edge of the lake, & close to all of the camp’s amenities. There are modern shower & toilet facilities along with an environmentally friendly off-the-grid power setup that accommodates all power needs regardless of local outages!
The waterfront activity area on Hinsberger Lake, situated along a small bay surrounded by trees, has a sandy beach and great swimming. Campsites are scattered around the property, accessible by canoe or short hike. Our main campfire boasts a circle of beautiful, majestic, ancient stones & overlooks the lake. With very few visitors or neighbours, the lake is both safe & fun for campers to spend much of their time participating in supervised activities on or around the water. Scattered throughout the facility, we have a low-ropes course, a number of high ropes elements, a climbing wall, a games court, hiking trails, and a large playing field.
Our meals are made fresh daily using wholesome ingredients with kids in mind. We serve wholesome, nutritious, child-centred meals which are sure to please. We can accommodate vegetarians and people with special diets. As well, we will work with parents to accommodate most food allergies.
